A Little Taste of Heaven

When people know the Ongs, you will see doctors, architects, bankers and business professionals. We were well connected in terms of our family tree. But despite our busy lives, we spare our time in golf, fine art and as like my sister who is a Forex Trader by day, makes cupcakes during the weekend! :)

Me and my sister always had a knack for creativity and as she puts it in baking and I put mine in branding!

My beautiful sister got married and converted to Christianity last year. As she wanted to be close to her beliefs, she called her online bakery as "Manna" - the food from God. So, I took her ideas and made a pinked shaped doyley with little cut out hearts design. Along with it, I put the word Manna with a cross in the A's to subconsciously link back to my sister's firm beliefs. And of course, a 'straight in your face' strategy to make sure people know what you are doing - simply put a cupcake on it! How different their perception goes on this picture, I believe it would be all in the business of baking! :)

And of course - using the consideration that some organizations disagree with the use of FB during office hours, I made a blog (basic layout and design) for my sister to update her pictures of her latest creation!

Branding in a Card

Remember those days when you were a kid, and the other kid was holding a catalogue of Card Templates and Sticker to order. And everyone would crowd around them and start their ordering. Eager, you would go home and ask your parents for RM 10 so that you can place a "booking" too. Then when the cards arrive with pretty colours, unicorns and rainbows, you give it to your friends. You looked "cool".

Today at 24, I shake hands and get cards as well. Time has never changed. No matter what, cards have evolved themselves from rainbows to more corporate colours and with one sole purpose - branding.

The Silicone Queen

I met a lady which was really keen to repackage her entire silicone lingerie range. Her products were relatively simple and she said that a consumer uses her silicone products best when they are using bare back dresses, low cuts and so on. The problem she faced however was the overall image of her products.

One problem I always face with Chinese (mind you, I'm Chinese as well), is the fact that Chinese individuals always want EVERYTHING on their package, business cards, et cetera. The good news is, its like a walking brochure. Bad news is - apart from it looking like you are a very 'kiasu' Chinese, is that it looks like you're screaming "HI I AM DESPERATE, PLEASE BUY MY STUFF. I SELL THIS THAT AND EVERYTHING. OWH.. HERE IS ALSO SOME OF MY PICTURES AND YOU KNOW IF I CAN FIT MY CHILDREN'S PICTURE IN TO SHOW YOU I AM A FAMILY GUY/GIRL, I WILL TOO'. One thing individuals must realize is, its not about telling the whole wide world what your product can do and keep pushing out, forcing yourselves into the minds of consumers, but instead - brand yourself in a way that consumers themselves open their doors to remember what your product actually is and what it can do.

The concept of this silicone range was to simplify her old image which had almost 50% irrelevant, badly composed information and unamusing pictures and to introduce a simple and elegant product range.

A Halloween Wedding

My sister, Jade has always been supporting of my career choices and one day, she went "Hey sistah, plan my wedding!". I was over the moon! So the details were as follows:

Date: 31/10/2009

Location: Holiday Inn Hotel

The moment my sister said 31/10/2009, I said “Isn’t it on Halloween?” Then we both went straight into thinking themes. My sister said , “Oh let’s all wear costumes!”. The idea was there but we had to make it more grand than just costumes. Seeing my sister is Christian-Chinese, I knew her dream wedding would be something “white” (please see below for my “Jacyln Made-Up-Marketing Phrases!”).

So the idea came up with big flashing lights “Hollywood Glam”.

The idea was for guest to be invited in with a beautiful long red carpet, and at the end waiting for them is a light gold backdrop designed with logos of my sister’s and husband’s names in checked form.

Upon ‘arriving’ on the elevated stand and gold backdrop. I hired a few amateur photographers and screaming “fans” to be taking photos and cheering – the main point was to basically make it like you’re walking the Hollywood Red Carpet!

And upon ‘checking’ themselves at the registration table, they will be given a sweet pink movie ticket, with the seat number representing the table they were to sit in, and the movie title would be the table movie theme. Each table has a movie theme which revolves around a famous classic love story, i.e. The Notebook, 50 First Dates, et cetera. Each table has also a stand holding up a picture of each movie poster.

After a cocktail or two in the foyer, the remaining guests would be ushered in and seated. Upon seating, they will also be greeted by a traditional wedding must – The Door Gift. But having a sister with an overly imaginative mind must have its perks, or well I wish my sister thinks that highly of me!~ The door gift designed was in shaped of a popcorn box! And I placed the same logo as on the backdrop on top of each box. Inside, a pair of teddy bears dressed in a cute western wedding style attire.

And as the light dimmed, and the spotlights pointed to the main door, the music burst out “Beat It!” and swooshed, dancing from afar is a look-a-like of Michael Jackson!

As I finished fantasizing the theme with my sister, I asked her, “So what do you think sistah?” And she went “It sounds great!

And well, for all those who were wondering how it went? It went exactly like how my sister said it “It was absolutely great!” (Well ok, I added the “Absolutely” :) )

A special thanks to my family members who have helped greatly in this wedding and of courses special kudos to Holiday Inn Hotel for the food presentation (because I have to admit, the Michael Jackson dancing was their idea! :))

Also, I would love to share this video of my sister's wedding, absolutely beautiful.

A Fishy Business

A freelance job was given to me through an introduction from a friend. As I was always marketing for a corporate company, it was indeed a challenge to now - market a consumer based product.

So, imagine with the budget given (please keep in mind the shop was a family-run business), I managed to turn a fish shop from this...

TO THIS!

Of course, the boss was a sporting guy who welcome new changes to his fish shop. So I decided to introduce a 'corporate' logo which was cute (in relevance to the target segment he was targeting - family and kids) .The logo was created by combining a little hint of Popeye (his hat & pipe) with an irresistibly cute seahorse. And of course, I jokingly added the theme song later singing "I'm Popi the Seahorse~~ pii pii~~ I am strong to the finish coz' I eat my seaweed~~ I'm Popi the Seahorse~~ pii pii!!"

The cards too had to be revamped as for starters - their previous printers got their closing dates wrong. So I made a 'dual-design' card - where one side was designed based on salt water fishes (Nemo) and the other was based on fresh water fishes. And to top everything up, I made Polo shirts to match their new uniformed image and wa-lah - Say hello to a new fresh ATLANTIS SAFARI! :)

Make Your Lies into Realities

Back at 2008 (not that it was long ago anyway), I was a fresh graduate holding a degree in Marketing and International Business. But soon enough, I have realized that good grades and a good university is not the only thing that makes an organization want to hire you. Good looks perhaps? The ability to speak more than 3 languages? Extra skills?Past experience? And so, when I was filling up my resume one day, in hopes of finding a job, I asked myself, what happened if I lied in my resume? - to the fact that I have super skills to make me sound like i am super awesome.

So, I pondered, perhaps work experience? nah, I would be fried like KFC when they called my 'so called' past employers, how about languages? I mean I could like pick up another language - And after seeing (yes, I have the powers to see the future!) myself tongue-tied in front of my employer who goes "hé, vous pouvez parler françai!!". So I decided to "lie" on my "Additional Skills"
Additional Skills: Photoshop 3 years Illustrator 1 year

Why Photoshop & Illustrator? Because these are design tools which I just simply would help me in my marketing conquest!~ brochures, signboards, newsletters, name cards, logos all in my head can now be put on the screens of my laptop! Or perhaps that was what I think my future employer will think.

To me, I knew the basics of the programs, how hard was it to learn? In an instance, a company hired me because they believed "Hey, this girl has an extra something!". And I will now like to tell you, WHEN YOU LIE, YOU SUFFER!

Imagine how I was struggling to know what tool is what and I would say every night, I slept at 2 am. But looking at what I can do now, fyi - i can now put wings on pigs to make them fly... I guess, if you are going to "lie", make sure you h*** work your a** off to make them into realities (or be sure that Jobstreet will be having an extra unique ID the next month)! And moreover, You will surely benefit from them in the future :) Well, I did!

Work completed:
1) Business Card + GUI for SMS Gateway Solution

2) Booklet Cover +Booklet

3) Brochures
4) Corporate Logo
